Have you ever wondered if you're paying a fair price for a medical service? Hospitals often charge far too high of prices that no one should be expected to pay. To see just how much hospitals are overcharging, our team analyzed 2018’s Medicare data. We calculated how many times, on average, hospitals were charging above the Medicare allowable amount. We broke the data down state by state to see which ones administer the most expensive health care services. This can be seen in the picture above, which is a visual representation of this break down. The darker the blue, the costlier the service.

1. Texas

         – Average Hospital Markup: 6.4

2. Nevada

         – Average Hospital Markup: 6.2

3. California

         – Average Hospital Markup: 6

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $198 billion

4. Mississippi

         – Average Hospital Markup: 6

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $25 billion

5. Georgia

         – Average Hospital Markup: 5.9

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $53 billion

6. Alabama

         – Average Hospital Markup: 5.8

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $30 billion

7. Florida

         – Average Hospital Markup: 5.8

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $140 billion

8. Hawaii

         – Average Hospital Markup: 5.8

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $5.2 billion

9. New Jersey

         – Average Hospital Markup: 5.8

         – Statewide Medicare Charges: $72 billion

10. Louisiana

         – Average Hospital Markup: 5.7

*Average Hospital Markup is the amount of times above the Medicare allowable amount a hospital charges for a service.

*Statewide Medicare Charges is the revenue that a hospital brought in that year from patients with Medicare.
